What is a Wind Farm?
Simply stated, a wind farm is a collection of wind turbines. Each individual turbine lies on a foundation approximately 3/4 to one acres. Normally, turbines are spaced far enough apart to minimize wake effects, which are caused when one wind turbine blocks the wind from other down-wind turbines, in turn reducing their productivity.
Since less than one acre is used for each wind turbine, most of the land remains available for farming or ranching activities. Wind development aims to minimize disturbances to crops and grazing activities. As a result, access to turbines is typically gained from existing section roads, or when not optimal, a new road is created in the most efficient manner possible. On average, all turbines, roads and associated facilities require approximately 2% of the total land area. | | | |
